Tracking A Hurricane on Twitter

…and you thought Twitter was just for telling your friends that you were taking a shower or getting a ham sandwich for lunch.

That’s not the case.

Twitter can be used as an advanced warning system for people in the event of a hurricane. It can also be used to get first hand accounts of damage and can also  be used in search and rescue.

As power goes off during a hurricane, people will be able to get updates on their cell phones. Days after the power is out, people will be able to charge thier cell phone via their car.

As for tracking a hurricane take a look at this Twitter profile that automatically retweets and posts hurricane warnings from the Hurricane Center in Miami. It’s caller Hurricane Tracker.

The Hurricane Tracker twitter profile will retweet information about the hurricane, get damage information and as well as give and receive first-hand real-time damage accounts. The profile is on auto-pilot by getting rss feeds from different services.

This is just one of the ways Twitter is helping to make our lives better.
