Cleveland Youth Tackle Football

I have been a football fan all my life. I enjoyed playing the sport as a youth, played it during high school and now I get to enjoy watching my son play football.  But I almost didn’t get to watch him play.  I had my son in the Cleveland Muny League for youth tackle football. Just before they were to scrimmage a team from Parma, they announced that they were going to discontinue his league for the 5,6, and 7 year olds.  My son and his team did play their scrimmage that day.

After the scrimmage, I headed over to the coach of the opposing team and asked if there were any openings on his team because Cleveland Muny League was shutting down the division due to a lack of enrollment. Without hesitation, the coach, Lee Strnad, accepted my son and his teammates and even honored the lower price we paid the muny league for the fee.

The next day we showed up at the practice field of the new team. The league was called the Pop Warner Southwest Seminoles. Not to disrespect the Cleveland youth football league, but the Southwest Seminoles were organized, had nice uniforms and most of all…parent participation. The parents and coaches worked in unison on fundraisers. The fundraisers were so successful that most parents were able to recover the fees that they paid and THEN SOME. (Amazing!)

I could also tell that the coaches had experience and they had the patience to take the time to work with 1st year players. This was my son’s first year at Cleveland youth tackle football.

If you want your child to play Cleveland youth tackle football, I highly recommend this league. Not only will your child learn the skills necessary to play full contact football but they will also learn:

  • Hardwork
  • Teamwork
  • Discipline
  • Sportsmanship
  • Develop friendships
  • Enhance problem solving skills
  • Get physically fit
  • and most of all HAVE FUN

If you want more information about this league, head on over to www.southwestseminoles.com This Cleveland area youth tackle football league is located in Parma, but they will take children from all over the area.

Gary The Numbers Guy WTAM

Everybody is an expert in something. Some people are experts in plumbing, some know how to engineer a computer program and some people are experts in numerology.  Are you looking for a free numerology reading?

Some people don’t believe in numerology, just like some people don’t believe that plumbers are experts with plumbing. “To each his own”  I say.

Now I have been following Gary The Numbers Guy for quite some time now and I have to say that he has a prediction that put the icing on the cake.

I believe it was well over a year ago when the economy was starting to crumble that Gary the numbers Guy said that; Because the dollar is falling, oil will soon be traded in another currency and not the U.S. dollar. (This quote is not verbatim but it’s close.)

Well guess what? Gary hit the nail on the head. Call it what you, will but there is truth in numbers. Don’t believe it, the story is right here.

Because gold is at an all-time high because the U.S. dollar is worthless, some of these big oil traders want to exchange gold for oil. Our money isn’t good enough.

Cleveland Browns Suck But The Fans Won’t Do Anything.

CLEVELAND - NOVEMBER 23: Brady Quinn #10 of t...

Cleveland Browns Suck

10 years ago, an expansion team called the Cleveland Browns entered the NFL. In that 10 years, the Browns have a record of  54-109.

I’m from Cleveland, and I was a fan of the Browns until they moved to Baltimore.

After the loss Sunday, I am convinced that this team sucks because of the fans. Why do I blame the fans? Because the fans will still buy tickets and support this team during years when they have records of 2-14 or 4-12. (NO TOUCHDOWNS IN 35 QUARTERS.)

As long as the fans buy the tickets and jerseys, the Browns are happy. The Cleveland Browns are a business, they are out to make a buck and they certainly aren’t loosing any money when the fans continue to support a team that constantly fails it’s fans.

If the fans stop buying Cleveland Browns tickets, the organization will lose money and will start to fix this sore in Cleveland.

I watched the Browns play today. I’m not an armchair quarterback by any means. But the Cleveland Browns organization loves the fans. They can be the worst team in the NFL, but the Browns will still sell you tickets.

The Cleveland Browns Suck.

10-year-old Gets Ticket For Lemonade Stand

10-year-old Gets Ticket For Lemonade Stand

When I was a kid growing up in the Collinwood area of Cleveland, my brother and I used to set up a Kool-Aid stand and sell cups of it on a hot day. We would sell each cup for a a dime. After making about a dollar, we would run to the store and buy baseball cards, gum, candy and soda.

Well in New York City a 10 year old girl had the same idea. She set up shop in Central Park on a hot day. She charged 50 cents a cup. (New York Prices…sheesh.)

After selling a few cups of lemonade, the department of parks in New York City asked her for a permit, shut her down, ticketed and fined her.

Laws are laws, but building a lemonade stand is a kid’s first taste of capitalism. It’s where a kid can learn that if he works hard, they can be anything they want to be in life. For a kid, capitalism means not having to ask your mom or dad for money. There is nothing wrong with it. It’s part of the American dream.

But in essence, it’s a shame that a kid that wants to make an honest buck, gets dissed by the City of New York.

Maybe she should have sold bluts or dime bags.  After all, it’s New York.

Congratulations West Park Vets – W130th Tri-League T-Ball Champs

Cleveland T-Ball League W130th Tri-League Champions

I love an underdog story. This one is amazing.

It’s about a bunch of kids between 5 and 7 that were last picked to form a t-ball team. Their team had no nepotism, no favoritism and no politics. The team was not hand-picked. There were no kids of board members on the team. There were no former “all-stars” on the team.

West Park Vets

West Park Vets

Every game these kids played…the rules were bent in favor of other politicized teams. Double plays and caught infield fly balls for outs were made against them. (According to Cleveland T-Ball League W130th Tri-League there is no infield fly rule or double plays in t-ball.)

They were stepped on, hit with balls and called names. That was until the playoffs.

The West Park Vets weren’t going to take it any more.

They had to win 3 playoff games in a row in order to win the championship. Every other team had at least a day off between games. Thank goodness for rain because the West Park Vets got some well deserved rest.

They played 6 innings their first game and won.

The second game was a joke. Coaches from other teams were bending the rules in the other team’s favor. One player on the opposite team was allowed to swing at the ball on the tee 10 times. Then on the 11th swing the player brought in two runs to tie the game.

The coach of the West Park Vets protested this immediately to board members who were present. Of course they let it go because they didn’t want the West Park Vets to win.

The West Park Vets played over 55 minutes and were ahead when a coach from the opposite team said that they have to play another inning. After multiple ties, the kids played until sunset then they finished the game another day for a victory. Parents were outraged that the league would let these little kids play until dark for over 2 hours. The parents had a right to be upset.

The third game was cake. The West Park Vets had great defense and offense to pull out a win for the Cleveland T-Ball League W130th Tri-League Championship.

Every odd was against them, including the league, board members, commissioners and coaches from teams that were eliminated from the playoffs. They didn’t want them to win. Councilman Sweeney’s team (Sweeney Sluggers) had won 4 years in a row. The championship trophys were probably already printed for the Sweeney Sluggers.

But the “runtz” that nobody wanted turned out to have the BIGGEST hearts.

Congratulations West Park Vets for winning the 2009 Cleveland T-Ball W.130th Tri-League Championship.

These kids couldn’t have done it without the skills taught by a great coach. Congrats to coach Scott and his team of coaches.

And congratulations to all the kids that played in the W.130th Tri-League. All of these kids played their hearts out. It was amazing to see how competitive all the kids were.

I love a great underdog story and this one would probably make a great Disney movie.

These games were more exciting than watching the Cleveland Indians.

Go see a little league or t ball game if you want some excitement. Heck, you might even get to see a commissioner push a coach.

Collinwood Arts Festival

Collinwood Arts Festival

A humid day in June. Sweat was rolling off my head. As I was wiping the sweat off my brow, I realized that I was back in Collinwood and enjoying it. (Yeah, I know TMI…If you ever talked to a  native from Collinwood you’ll know this.)

See, Collinwood is  a neighborhood in Cleveland with a rich history and a bad reputation.

I was born there, raised there and well, my family moved just before I had to go to high school.

The area was getting bad in the late 80′s. I remember seeing drunks, pimps and a murder victim being pulled from a building when I was 14 years old. The Hells Angels used to frequent the motorcycle shop on the corner of 149th and Lakeshore. I used to have to walk past it to  get to and from my school, St. Jeromes

When my parents moved my brother and  I to the Westside of Cleveland, I swore that I would never go back to Collinwood. There’s no fun there.

Forward to 2009.

After reading the local paper and reading blogs, I was seeing that my old neighborhood was going through a change. A couple of years back, my mom moved back to Collinwood to live near the Euclid Beach area where she grew up. (She used to rent from the Humphrey family.) One day I decided to drive around the Waterloo area of Collinwood.  I was looking for the old black bomb marks left over from a failed mob hit in the 70′s and I was looking for the barber shop my father used to take me to. The barber and the bomb marks were gone.

But I noticed something amazing. There area had color. It was bright. As a kid, I remember the area being dull. There were businesses, colorful bars and even a place called the Beachland Ballroom. I read that there was going to be an art festival there.

I told my wife that I wanted to go a Cleveland art festival and she said, “Why do you want to go to an art festival, you know nothing about art.” I told my wife that I wanted to see what this Collinwood Arts Festival was all about.

Arts Collinwood FestivalTo make a long story short, we went to the festival and had a blast. I was very impressed that there was much to do, much to see and a lot of interaction with some of the most friendly people.  The whole neighborhood was at peace and came together. I saw just about every nationality, every race, every creed…people that came to celebrate life. It was amazing and in living color.

This was not the Collinwood that I left. But one thing that I realized was that you can take the boy out of Collinwood, but you can NEVER take the Collinwood out of the boy. Some interesting facts I would like to share about Collinwood.

  • The old Jepson’s pharmacy building housed the office of Dr. Bowman. He was a pioneer in woman’s mental health. I knew this because my mom would take me to the Friday night meetings. (Sorry mom.)
  • A mobster named Danny Green lived on Waterloo Rd. The old school mobsters still think he’s alive because they attempted to whack him a few times and he lived.
  • Fanny’s Restaurant was the place to go on Sunday. They had the best breakfasts.
  • There are streets in North Collinwood that are incorporated. They are their own entity. These would include Dalewood, Groveland Club Drive, Bonniewood, Overlook Park Drive. (I grew up on Groveland, my grandma lived on Bonniewood and my cousins lived on Overlook Park Drive.
  • My late Uncle Paul Brokaw used to have firework shows on Overlook. His daughter, my cousin, is Monica Potter. From Con Air, Last House on the Left, Saw, Patch Adams and more.
  • Okay, I’m bragging and talking too much. But if you are a native from Collinwood you would understand.
